Nervous Dog Problems
Testimonials and Case Histories from Clients
Some case histories and testimonials covering dogs pulling on the leash and getting your dog to recall from a distance .
Peg - A rescued Jack Russell Terrier breeding bitch with a timid disposition.
Minstrel - a rescued Border Collie with excitement and traffic problems.
Hi there,
Our friends in Chellaston have recently (10 weeks ago) adopted a dog from a rescue kennel. She is approx. 3 years old. She is fantastic, obedient and very placid. Problem is, when they leave her at night in the kitchen she whines all night, throws herself at the door, scratches the door and always wees (on newspaper) We want to help!
Peg has been used as a breeding bitch and is originally from Ireland. She is quite timid as are a lot of breeding dogs because they get very little human contact. I have dealt with several that have never been outside for a walk and are badly traumatised. Peg was nervous and wary and could not settle in the house. She needed a den to make her feel safe and secure. I suggested Liz and Mo construct a den in the garage, out of draughts and away from any loud noises.
We also took Peg out for a walk with Pip and after a while she actually started to behave like a dog for the first time in her life. It was great to see her start to scent and take an interest in other dogs.
Hello Ade, Just to let you know that the advice you gave us on Peg (our Jack Russell rescue dog) has worked! We took note of your recommendation not to stress her out even more by insisting that she sleep in the kitchen and now she sleeps in the garage (with back door closed). We constructed a box as you advised and this has made her feel much more secure. She now sleeps happily overnight with no more crying or weeing and is now much more settled altogether.
We can't thank you enough for your help and would have no hesitation in recommending you to others with problem dogs. Thank goodness our friend persuaded us to use your services - without which we would still no doubt be experiencing sleepless nights and a very distressed little dog!
We have attached a photo of happy little Peg!
Thank you once again.
Liz & Mo (Chellaston)

MINSTREL is an 11 month old Border Collie belonging to Pete and Muriel from Leek in Staffordshire. He is a rescue dog and has a few problems which they needed help with. Minstrel goes berserk inside the car when he sees another car. He barks, spins around and generally gets very excited. He also likes to chase cars when he sees them on a roadside walk. He lunges and barks excitedly. He also jumps up all the time and is going to have to get used to having a cat in the house.
I showed P&M how to walk Minstrel on the lead. Then we did some roadside behaviour techniques and finally I ended up in the boot of their 4x4 with Minstrel to correct his manic excitement. Pete wrote to me a couple of weeks later:
We are progressing really well with Minstrel. We have blacked out the rear window of the car and he will now sit calmly whilst we are driving, with no corrections needed. He does get very excited when the engine is first started and Muriel has to sit on the back seat to calm him down. After this he is fine.
His basic training is also going well, walking to heel, sit, lie down and stay have all been mastered in under two weeks.
The only real problem is walking in traffic. He will sit calmly and watch the vehicles go by, but will not walk calmly to heel. I would appreciate any further guidance that you can offer, as he is quite a handful and Muriel cannot manage him. We turn around, step back to get his attention, but the two minute walk along the main road to work takes about 20 minutes and I still feel that he does not get it. He is absolutely fine if there is no traffic.
We are introducing him very gradually to the cat and we have had no problems so far. He is a great dog, very playful and comes back to us when he is called. He is looking less thin now and has put on over 1 kg in weight.
We take him to work with us every day and he gets on really well with our staff and clients, although he is slightly disruptive as he runs around playing with his toys all day. Thank you very much for your guidance, it has been a great help to us.
Best wishes, Pete
