Dog Senses

A dog has good eyesight, a highly developed sense of smell, a keen ear and a sensitive mouth.

It also has a strong set of teeth and jaw muscles for gripping, ripping, gnawing and carrying.

Yet a dog can gently lift up its puppies to move them to a different place without harm.

A dog's senses are more finely tuned than any human.

A dog is able to hear higher frequency sounds than a human and to detect sounds from much further away.

A dog's eyes are forward looking, indicating it is a predator. In the wild, dogs hunt in packs and will bring down live prey by working together

They will also eat carrion, using a highly developed sense of smell to decide whether it is edible.

A wild dog will gorge itself on a kill and then return to its young to feed them. It has the ability to regurgitate food.

Dogs can be trained to help blind or physically impaired people go about their daily lives safely.

A dog can help to lower blood pressure in humans.

They are used to detect people buried in avalanches or earthquakes.

Dogs will pull sleds, round up sheep or cattle or act as guard dogs.

Doberman Pinschers have many talents including tracking, watchdog, guarding, police work, military work, search & rescue, therapy work, competitive obedience and schutzhund (protection dog).

All these remarkable things are inherent in the incredible animal that we call a dog.
